The EU fears Trump - but its real problem is Biden
Around six months before the end of his term, we are on the brink of a third world war
Donald Trump is everywhere. With a single election campaign appearance, the former US president has managed to shape the debates in the EU and NATO. Suddenly everyone is talking about the 2 per cent target and European nuclear weapons.
But there's no reason to jump over Trump's coattails. The man is a notorious provocateur and lawbreaker - so far it is not even clear whether he will be allowed to stand for election in November.
The real problem is in the White House and his name is Joe Biden. The supposedly still constructive president has led Europe and the world into a deep crisis. The "leader of the free world" is leaving behind a bitter legacy.
Biden did nothing to prevent the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He did nothing to end the war. He talked up the end of Nord Stream and talked the EU into expensive LNG.
His sanctions have not only cut the EU off from Russia, they are now also disrupting trade with China. His "Inflation Reduction Act" is luring German companies to the USA and distorting the market for "green" technologies.
As if all this wasn't bad enough, Biden has embroiled the US in a multi-front war in the Middle East, drawing capacity out of Ukraine and turning the rest of the world against the West.
Around six months before the end of his term of office, we are on the brink of a third world war; a spark could ignite a major conflagration at any time. Poland, the Baltic states, Lebanon, Taiwan and even the Red Sea - danger threatens everywhere.
Yet EU politicians still see Biden as the great friend and helper - when he is no longer even in a position to deliver the promised aid for Ukraine. Biden has become a "lame duck".
