Davos wants to "rebuild trust" - seriously?
In the midst of the worst crisis since the end of the Cold War, the Western elite wants to "restore trust". Sounds like a joke, but is meant (deadly) seriously.
You can't make this stuff up: In the midst of the worst crisis since the end of the Cold War, the same leaders who are responsible for the mess want to "rebuild trust".
"Rebuild Trust" is the motto of this week's meeting of the Western elite in Davos.
The keynote speakers are, of all people, those who are largely responsible for the crisis: Ukraine's President Volodymyr Selenskyj and Israel's President Isaac Herzog.
Selensky is currently losing the trust of his own citizens. And Herzog stands for a country that has lost the trust of half the world - Israel has to answer for the accusation of genocide.
No real answers to the crisis of confidence can therefore be expected from Davos. This also applies to EUrope. In the EU, the crisis of confidence has reached unprecedented proportions.
Anti-government protests are not only taking place in Germany, but also in Spain and Poland. In Italy, Sweden and the Netherlands, the crisis has brought right-wing populists and nationalists to power.
In France, President Macron is trying to save his pro-EU policies with a new government. Nevertheless, the polls point to a victory for the nationalists in the European elections.
This is no longer a crisis of confidence, but a crisis of legitimacy. It could turn into a systemic crisis at any time - the liberals in the EU Parliament are already warning of an "ungovernable" EU.
The fact that this crisis could be resolved in Davos, of all places, is a comedy of the ages. It shows that the elites and the experts associated with them are completely out of touch.
Nevertheless, the event should be taken seriously. Because it is also about war and peace; the Western "leaders" are swearing "their" peoples to long, if not endless wars...
